These few seconds give the fluids time to circulate and the Allison to prime itself if it has been sitting for awhile. With the pickup I wait a few seconds after cold start and the voltmeter making its first move upscale indicated the intake/combustion chamber heat is reasonable is a good short timer to use. With my Corvette and ATS I start them and as soon as they drop to curb idle (a few seconds at most) I am ready to drive away. I live in a rural area so it is easy for me to do a no stress powertrain warmup because traffic isn't an issue. The cold start fast idle, separate from the commanded warm fast idle, is certainly better than just letting a freshly started cold diesel idle but it still isn't nearly as good as warming up under a normal load. Even with the cold warm up strategy employed by the Duramax, you are still better off getting the truck into gear and driving at a moderate power level to get it up to temperature at a reasonable rate. In general, there are times where you may have to idle for an extended time and often high idle is better for these situations BUT extended idling is not good for an engine and this is particularly true for current emissions controlled diesels. As the voltage drops further the truck will automatically compensate by increasing its idle speed, but with high idle you'll probably never see any battery depletion in the first place. Without high idle you can still run these devices, but at normal idle speed the charging system will not be able to supply its rated amperage, so what happens is the voltage across the alternators drops to the battery voltage when the load is applied which is equivalent to saying that the batteries begin to deplete.
